I want everyone to be able to create beautiful, high energy and Co2 infused aquascapes that are cheap to run via air driven filtration. Well, you can't get much more accessible than this filter that I made with plastic pipe from ToolStation. FILTER UPDATE HERE: • Did This DIY Aquarium Filter Actually... In this accessible aquascape tutorial, I’ll show you how I created an affordable high tech Betta tank with my new low tech DIY filter design which uses a combination of both undergravel and sponge filtration to create a fantastic environment for plants to thrive. I think this low budget planted tank looks epic, and I hope you agree! Did you know that undergravel filtration means nitrification occurs at root level, and this can have enormous benefits to your plants? You’ll see in this video just how amazingly the undergravel filter supported a carpet of lilaeopsis to grow. Truly incredible!

    Running two of the 40 gallon breeder stands won't work on the 125 gallon. I'm should work for the six foot span side to side, but the 125 I believe is 24 inches front to bank which is obviously more than the 18 inches for the 40 breeder stands.

    Most articles I have read on dosing 3% hydrogen peroxide say to use 1.5 to 2 ml per gallon. Why did you use 3 ml per gallon or 30 ml for 10 gallons? I had a major outbreak of black beard algae and it took over my tank before I discovered using 3% hydrogen peroxide to treat it. The BBA was in all my decorations, plants and the glass and I figured I would give it a shot. I dosed 2 ml per gallon for 2 weeks and the BBA disappeared. I then added Florida Flag Fish to my tank as they eat BBA and it has been over a year and I have not had another outbreak. Every once in a while I see a tuft of BBA, but the Florida Flag Fish eat it before it spreads. Thanks for the great videos. If I had seen your videos a couple of years ago it would have been so helpful.

      30 mL is 1 ounce. That is how much you need to put in per 10 gallons of aquarium water. As you can tell by my latest video where I show the tank all inhabitants of the tank are doing just fine along with what plants the goldfish don't eat are doing fine..

    Hello Dr. Novak, got a question for you. I’ve been watching for a while and appreciate your content. I am about to set up another aquarium and I want to use a plenum (it will be my first one). My question is, will a plenum or slow moving plenum be just as affective or useful in an unplanted aquarium? It will be an African shell dweller set up. Also, would it be just as effective to put safe t sorb or kitty litter in the plenum instead of on the plates under the substrate? Thanks for all the helpful info!

    • @anoxicfiltrationplenums
      @anoxicfiltrationplenums День тому

      As you can see from my latest video where I show the goldfish aquarium in the lanai it barely has any plants at all. Plenums work perfectly fine with or without plants. People who advocate that the aquarium substrate needs to be one to 2 inches or more always insist upon 72% of the tank be plants but not so with a Plenum, it is an option.

      As I've said, before, any goldfish that I have bought from the United States, are still alive to this day. Any other goldfish that were bought from overseas like Thailand, except for two of them that I sold, got dropsy and passed on. Any time you buy a goldfish from Thailand you better make sure that they will acclimate to your water conditions and food. You have to remember that all those goldfish are grown in Ponds not aquariums or vats like in the US. I think there is a grower here in the US that grows nice goldfish just like they do in Thailand, but he grows all his fish in the US and they do not seem to have the same problems with dropsy like to Thailand, goldfish do. I've had American goldfish last 15 to 17 years without any problems.. The Ranchus I had only lasted no longer than about two years that were bought from Thailand.

    Being an avid gardener, both in my yard and aquariums I fall victim to the trend of NOT introducing foreign chemicals into those two environments. Perhaps the Roundup scare started this trend and has impacted my aquarium keeping. Nonetheless I respect your research on this and the knowledge transfer to your followers. Right now I am experimenting with floating watersprite. The massive root clusters and spreading, floating foliage seem to do a good job of absorbing excess nutrients, dimming the lights on the bottom and in turn keeping the algae under control.

    Thank you for your video Dr. I have a 4000 liter koi pond; about 1000 gallons; well filtered. Have been having problems with long brown algae because the pond is exposed to a bright sunlight. I have tried to grow emergent aquatic plants to absorb the nitrate, but it has not been working well because apparently the plants consume the Potassium and Phosphate from the water quicker, making them limiting the nitrate absorption. I'm still trying to dose these nutrients, but wary about hurting the fish. I want to try your method of adding H2O2. If you don't mind, can you confirm that the concentration of the H2O2 is 3%, and dosage you mentioned is 30ml/10 gallons? It comes out to about 3 liters/1000 gallons per day. Appreciate it, thank you!

    Is it recommended to inject the hydrogen peroxide in the dark hours?

      Yes it is. That is why I only inject the hydrogen peroxide when the lights are out and then in a few hours the lights will come on.
